Poignant Memorial to the Neptune Disaster

by Commander Peter Adams

HMNB Clyde has hosted various visits by the Neptune Association and was fortunate enough recently to welcome John and Rosemary Oliver.
Serving in the Royal Navy as a signalman from 1943 -1953, John is the brother of Leading Seaman Thomas Oliver who was lost in the Neptune disaster of 1941.
John had very kindly donated a plaque to HMNB Clyde that originally had been intended fo the Neptune Memorial, a commemorative obelisk erected at Alrewas in Staffordshire in July 2005.

The plaque illustrates the route that had been taken by' Force 'K' and now has pride of place in the Neptune Memorial Chapel situated within St. John's Church.
